Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and exclusion from healthcare.
MSF International Legal Department deals with various issues to provide legal support to all MSF entities and MSF field operations.
Epicentre is an organization that was created in 1986 by MSF dedicated to research, field epidemiology and training in line with both MSF programmes and Epicentre’s Research Centres in Uganda and Niger. Epicentre is a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre.

Main responsibilities
Under the hierarchical supervision of Epicentre and the functional supervision of the MSF International Legal Department, the legal advisor will advise, negotiate and manage the legal framework underpinning Epicentre medical research and epidemiological activities. He is also responsible for coordinating and ensuring the coherence of the various legal frameworks and MSF policies underpinning the different fields of activity of MSF and Epicentre. The legal advisor will: – Provide legal support to research projects and related agreements with multiple actors having different and sometimes competing agendas (countries, NGOs, WHO, laboratories, research institutes), notably: drafting and negotiating research collaboration agreements; developing standards and terms to legally and ethically process and safeguard research participants data and samples (data protection) in regards to Epicentre research activities.

  • Analyze, draft and review legal frame of implementation by Epicentre of its research activities in their countries of performance of researches.

  • Provide briefs, design tools, and provide trainings regarding the legal frame of medical research and related agreements.

  • Provide legal support on:
    a. Archiving of Epicentre research related documentation
    b. Epicentre research databases related issues.

  • Support the implementation of:
    a. MSF Data Sharing Policy and any updates;
    b. MSF Data Protection Policy (currently being drafted)

Skills required
o Legal degree : Masters.
o Minimum 5 years’ experience as a lawyer /legal advisor – including in medical research-ethics, intellectual property.
o Experience in data privacy/ biobanking is a plus.
o Excellent English (fluency is a must both in writing and orally); Good French is a plus.
o Rigor, clarity and ability to adapt to different legal systems, sense of priorities and of organization.
o Ability to translate an operational negotiation in legal language.
o MSF knowledge is a plus.

o Based in Paris with short term travels
o Full-time open-ended contract, starting date as soon as possible
o Gross annual remuneration according to experience: between 47 884€ and 51 681€ on 13 months. 22 compensation days per year, 100% health coverage by Epicentre, 50% transportation costs reimbursement, meal vouchers.
