Next Generation Sequencing Data Analyst

Role

Bioversity International is seeking a scientific expert in the area of Next-Generation Sequencing technologies (NGS) to support banana genetic resources conservation and use. The incumbent will contribute to functional genomics projects related to gene-trait/phenotype analyses with a focus on drought stress evaluation of banana. The selected candidate will also contribute to the South Green Bioinformatics platform environment, a community of bioinformatics scientists from French Research institutions including CIRAD, IRD, INRA and Bioversity International with a shared interest in the field of agriculture, food, biodiversity and environment.

Key responsibilities

Based in the Bioinformatics team in Montpellier, the selected candidate will work as part of the Musa Genetic Resources, an international multidisciplinary team, including experienced scientists in genetics, genomics, phenotyping and bioinformatics based in Montpellier, France and in Leuven, Belgium. Using expert knowledge of NGS technologies, the Data Analyst will:

· Conduct genomic mapping on reference genome sequences

· Manipulate, filter SNP datasets and study chromosomal distribution, promote analysis and the effect of amino acid changes

· Conduct differential gene expression analyses and functional annotation including relevant statistics

· Deliver capacity building and training in NGS analyses

· Provide support in bioinformatic analyses to the other members of the team as needed

Qualifications and competencies

Essential qualifications and competencies

· Master degree in Genomics, Bioinformatics or Plant Breeding

· Previous experience with NGS analyses (Transcriptomics, SNPs calling, Gene annotation),

· Experience in analysing large data sets using Python, Perl or R

· Experience with analytical pipelines for SNPs prediction and RNA-Seq analyses under HPC environment; Solid knowledge of relevant software tools and formats

· Excellent command of the English language, both written and spoken

· Good interpersonal and teamwork skills

· Ability to work with a high degree of independence within assigned areas

· Well-developed analytical and synthesizing skills with the ability to write clearly and concisely

· Well-developed personal organisation and priority-setting skills

· Willingness to travel regularly to across Europe in particular in Leuven, Belgium

Desirable qualifications and competencies

· Working knowledge of French

· Experience with polyploid organisms

· Good written and oral communication skills and a record of peer-reviewed publications

· Knowledge of phenotypic data management

Terms and conditions: This is a locally recruited professional position, based in Montpellier, France. All benefits are denominated and paid in Euro. Bioversity’s remuneration package includes a competitive salary exempt from French income tax (an internal taxation is applied), leave provisions, medical and life insurance and a non-contributory retirement plan. The contract will be for a period of two years and a half subject to a probationary period of six months with the possibility of renewal.
